Generally, my workflow starts on paper and ends with the physical (or digital) artwork. Somewhere in the middle, I’ll have 2D mocks. Let’s talk about how they’re different from other sketches and when/where I use them.

Why not just sketch?

I almost always do, but sometimes you need a bit more accuracy in terms of scale and position.

Why not just use a 3D model?

If you’ve got the skills do do it quickly without much effort, go ahead! 3D models are incredibly useful for a lot of things but I find them overkill early on. Especially in cases where stuff is getting made non-digitally, that model can’t be reused for fabrication.
